About Us

Brain Injury Association of Durham Region (BIAD) is a registered, not-for-profit charitable organization, whose members are people who have experienced brain injuries and their caregivers. We serve the Durham Region by providing non-medical resources and supports.

Application For Service

BIAD offers non-medical Brain Injury community support services. An application can be made by the individual (Self-referral) or Professionals (primary health care/community partners) by completing an Application for Services form.

Our Services

The Brain Injury Association of Durham Region provides a variety of supports for people of Durham Region who have experienced brain injuries.

Some of the supports we provide in include:

Adult Day Program (ADP)

This program offers cognitive based programming along with social and recreational opportunities for individuals with Acquired Brain Injury to socialize and learn new skills. The program is constantly changing based on participant input. Below are the different options that the Adult Day Program provides.

Community Support Program

The Community Support Program offers outreach services provided to support individuals who are affected by brain injury and who have the capability of living independently, or who are being supported by family / others in the community.

Peer Support Program

The Peer Support Program connects people with a Mentor who has lived experiences with an individual (Partner) who is also living with the effects of an acquired brain injury who requires the support whether they be a survivor or caregiver.

Supported Independent Living Program

The Supported independent living program by BIAD is specifically designed to cater to the needs of individuals who have suffered a brain injury and require additional support to live independently.

Beyond Barriers Art Show- Call for Artists!

The Ajax Public Library and Town of Ajax are hosting the Beyond Barriers Art Show in celebration of International Day of Persons with Disabilities — and we’re inviting our BIAD artists to take part!
This community art show celebrates creativity, resilience, and inclusion, featuring artwork created by people with disabilities on the theme: “No Limits.”

You can create your artwork at BIAD or at home. If you’d like it to be included in BIAD’s showcase, please make sure to submit it to BIAD by Friday, November 10th, 2025.

Eligibility:

  • One artwork submission per person.
  • Must be two-dimensional (pen, pencil, crayon, collage, paint, pastels, markers, or combinations).
  • Artwork should be on 8.5 x 11” paper or canvas (preferably in an envelope). Submissions not on the specified size will not be accepted.

Exhibit dates: December 1–19, 2025

Reception: Wednesday, December 3, 2025 — BIAD will be attending!

All participating artists will be entered to win one of three $50 Michaels gift cards!

Pinewood Addiction Counsellors, Matt and Harrison, will be available at BIAD every fourth Monday,  from 2 to 3 PM. They will engage in discussions about substance use and their programs with individuals. This will be a drop-in opportunity open to all BIAD clients.

What it is:
Outreach Drop-In is a flexible, short-term support option for BIAD clients who do not have an assigned worker. These sessions provide help with immediate needs, quick questions, and simple applications — no appointment needed, just drop in during open hours.

Application for Service

BIAD offers non-medical Brain Injury community support services. An application can be made by the individual (Self-referral) or Professionals (primary health care/community partners) by completing an Application for Services form.
